Covenant House Alaska is an affiliate of Covenant House International, the nation’s largest privately funded nonprofit organization responding to the needs of young people who suffer from homelessness, abuse and neglect. Covenant House’s mission is to serve suffering children of the street with absolute respect and unconditional love. In 1972, Covenant House established its first official intake center and shelter to serve homeless young people in New York City. Throughout the 1970s, Covenant House continued to expand its social service programs in New York City and by 1980 reached other cities.
In 1986, Archbishop Hurley of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Anchorage invited Covenant House to consider a site in Anchorage. After a needs assessment by the Mayor of Anchorage and an evaluation by the Covenant House Corporate office, it was determined that support would be pledged for an Anchorage program if an appropriate building could be located. On October 31, 1988 Covenant House Alaska opened its doors and has been a “lifeline from the streets” for homeless and runaway youth.
Since opening its doors, Covenant House Alaska has established itself as a well-respected, lead agency that is an integral part of the Alaskan community. A focus on advocacy has made us a strong voice for the rights and needs of at-risk youth in Alaska. Since our opening in 1988, we have serviced over 17,000 youth and have partnered with multiple stakeholders who are invested in us succeeding.
"COVENANT HOUSE'S MISSION
“We who recognize God’s providence and fidelity to His people are dedicated to living out His covenant among ourselves and those children we serve, with absolute respect and unconditional love. That commitment calls us to serve suffering children of the street, and to protect and safeguard all children. Just as Christ in His humanity is the visible sign of God’s presence among His people, so our efforts together in the covenant community are a visible sign that effects the presence of God, working through the Holy Spirit among ourselves and our kids.”
